Breathward Mask

Aura Moderate Abjuration; CL 9th
Slot head, see text; Price 55,000gp; Weight 5lbs
HP 5; Hardness 2

DESCRIPTION

This finely tooled leather mask covers the entire head of the wearer, allowing them to breathe the noxious fumes of the miasma through a strange looking chamber. The mask only protects the wearer against the deadly effects of breathing miasma; the wearer is still vulnerable against the spores of the Breath.

The wearer is able to safely breathe miasma for a total of 72 hours before the crystal within loses its properties, causing the enchantments to falter and expose the wearer to miasma. Due to its experimental nature, the mask must then be brought to a caster of 9th level or higher with the ability to cast Miasma Bubble* to be repaired. Repairing costs 10,000gp; 5,000gp for re-enchanting costs and 5,000gp for a suitable Residuum crystal. Since Miasma Ward is a rare spell, it can be learned by disassembling or inspecting an inert Breathward Mask (an event that takes 5 hours) with a successful DC 20 Spellcraft. If you fail, you must wait one week before attempting another spellcraft from the disassembled parts.

Wearing a Breathward Mask takes up the Head and Eyes slot, but the lenses of the mask may be enchanted as per the additional abilities rule. Most headbands still function, but follow your GM’s discretion.

CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS

Craft Wondrous Item, Miasma Ward*, 5,000gp (100gp per ‘charge’) worth of Residuum; Cost 25,000gp

Breathward Mask, Warded

Aura Moderate Abjuration and Faint Conjuration; CL 9th
Slot head, see text; Price 77,500gp; Weight 5lbs
HP 20; Hardness 9

DESCRIPTION

This rune-covered sharkskin mask covers the entire head of the wearer, allowing them to breathe the noxious fumes of the miasma through a strange looking chamber. As the wearer walks through miasma, their body is protected by a thin layer of force from the spores of the Breath. The protective enchantment also makes the mask itself more durable, and makes resupplying a new crystal a cheaper affair.

The wearer is able to safely travel the Breath for a total of 72 hours before the crystal within loses its properties, causing the enchantments to become inert and expose the wearer. As long as the crystal supplier is a spellcaster, they may reinsert a residuum crystal worth 5,000gp with a DC 17 spellcraft. They may not use a crystal worth less than 5,000gp, but crystals worth more than 5,000gp on GM’s discretion. Since Miasma Ward is a rare spell, it can be learned by studying a Warded Breathward Mask (an event that takes 5 hours) with a successful DC 20 Spellcraft. If you fail, you must wait one week before attempting to another spellcraft.

Wearing a Breathward Mask takes up the Head and Eyes slot, but the lenses of the mask may be enchanted as per the additional abilities rule. Most headbands still function, but follow your GM’s discretion.

CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS

Craft Wondrous Item, Miasma Ward*, Ablative Barrier, 5,000gp (100gp per ‘charge’) worth of Residuum; Cost 36,250gp

Bio:

Crafted of hard brown leather, this rune-covered mask has glass lenses that cover the eyes and a central breathing cylinder. There are two styles that the mask can come in: backless, with securing straps that slip on over the head, and full head. The glass lenses are expertly cut so that there are is deformation or cloudiness.

The essential design is in the breathing cylinder. A main mesh grate keeps out larger spores, while a finer secondary one holds out the rest. If one pries apart this tube and looks within, an ample residuum crystal is the source of magical power. As one spends time within the miasma the crystal will fill until it is clouded the complete color of the Breath, at which point the Masks become inert.
